On the second attempt, Nautilus slipped beneath the Arctic ice on August 1, 1958, and the crew entered a world of structured, absolute silence. The public announcement came on August 8, after Nautilus had cleared the ice and surfaced into open Atlantic water off the coast of Iceland — and the strategic implications were immediate and undeniable: the polar icecap was no longer an obstacle. It was a highway. When Nautilus arrived in New York Harbor on August 25, the city gave her a ticker-tape parade — one of the last great paper-blizzard welcomes that Broadway still knew how to produce. Anderson received the Legion of Merit from Eisenhower at the White House, and the eighty-crew members each received a Presidential Unit Citation. But the deeper legacy was architectural, not ceremonial. The transit proved that the Polaris missile submarine — then in final development — could operate in Arctic waters, launching ballistic missiles from beneath the ice and retiring again before any surface fleet could respond. The George Washington-class boats that followed would carry sixteen Polaris A-1 missiles and conduct deterrence patrols beneath the very ice Anderson had crossed. The geography of nuclear deterrence had been redrawn in ninety-six hours by a crew of eighty men who could not tell their wives where they were going.
San Diego felt that redrawn geography in the decades that followed.
