USS Nimitz — the ship that changed what a carrier could do, homeported in San Diego.

CVN-68 was the first of the nuclear-powered Nimitz class. She entered service in 1975 and is still deployed. She was home-ported in Bremerton, then San Diego.

On 3 May 1975, at Pier 12 of the Norfolk Naval Station, Captain Bryan W. Compton accepted the commissioning pennant of USS Nimitz (CVN-68) — at that moment the largest warship in the history of navigation. She displaced 101,196 tons fully loaded, stretched 1,092 feet from stem to stern across a flight deck of four and a half acres, and carried in her magazines enough ordnance to sustain strike operations against a continent-sized adversary for weeks on end. Yet her most revolutionary feature was invisible: buried forty feet below the waterline, twin Westinghouse A4W pressurized-water reactors capable of driving her at thirty-plus knots for more than twenty years without a single drop of oil fuel. The age of the nuclear supercarrier had arrived, and with it a new theory of seapower — that a nation could project decisive force to any ocean on earth, indefinitely, without once stopping to take on fuel.

The ship named for Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz, the architect of American victory in the Pacific, had been long in coming. Congress first authorized the class in 1967, the keel was laid at Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company on 22 June 1968, and the hull slid down the ways on 13 May 1972 — a gestation of nearly seven years that reflected the engineering ambitions, the budget battles, and the fierce inter-service politics that attended every supercarrier since USS Enterprise (CVN-65) first went to sea in 1961. The Nimitz class was conceived to correct Enterprise's compromises: her eight reactors were simplified to two, her hull rationalized for serial production, and costs structured so that a class of ten could follow on a predictable budget. The planners expected the design to define American carrier aviation well into the twenty-first century. They were right — they simply could not know quite how far into that century Nimitz herself would still be at sea.

Her first test of strategic consequence came not in pitched battle but in catastrophic failure. In April 1980, Nimitz was operating in the North Arabian Sea in support of Operation Eagle Claw, the Carter administration's audacious plan to extract 52 American hostages from the occupied embassy compound in Tehran. Her flight deck served as the launch point for eight RH-53D Sea Stallion helicopters tasked with flying 900 miles into Iranian airspace at low altitude, under radio silence, in total darkness. When three helicopters aborted with mechanical failures and a fourth was damaged at the desert staging point called Desert One, the mission commander called a withdrawal — which turned immediately to catastrophe when rotor wash from a repositioning helicopter ignited a C-130 tanker, killing eight servicemen and leaving the surviving aircraft abandoned on Iranian soil. For Nimitz's crew, waiting at battle stations with a full air wing on five-minute standby, the radio silence that followed was its own ordeal. The disaster drove a wholesale reorganization of American special-operations capability and gave birth, ultimately, to the Joint Special Operations Command — the institutional DNA of every tier-one mission since.

Through the decades that followed, Nimitz steamed the contested corridors of the Mediterranean, the Indian Ocean, and the Western Pacific, her presence itself a form of statecraft. When Soviet Kiev-class carriers sortied from Severomorsk to shadow American battle groups, it was the nuclear supercarrier — capable of generating 120 strike sorties per day indefinitely, without ever detaching from the group to find an oil pier — that rendered the competition a mathematical exercise in futility. The F-14 Tomcats of her successive air wings flew combat air patrol at ranges that earlier conventionally-powered carriers could not have sustained, cycling back to a ship that required no fuel escort, no strategic pause, no relief. The Nimitz class rewrote the tactical calculus of carrier warfare: range and endurance were no longer variables to be managed but constants to be assumed. In the silent ledger of the Cold War, that permanence counted for more than any single engagement on the record.

By the late 1990s, after more than two decades of continuous deployment cycles spanning three oceans and four major crises, Nimitz returned to Newport News for her Refueling and Complex Overhaul (RCOH) — the single most comprehensive maintenance evolution in the Navy's arsenal. The twin reactors were opened, spent cores removed, fresh fuel assemblies installed, and an estimated three million man-hours of skilled labor were applied to every major system aboard: updated combat direction centers, revised aviation fuel capacity, overhauled catapults and arresting gear, new damage-control infrastructure throughout. The ship that emerged was, in all the ways that mattered operationally, essentially new — with two reactor cores warranted for another twenty-plus years of full-power steaming. No conventionally powered carrier could be so completely renewed; the immense capital investment that had made Congress flinch in 1967 was now paying compound interest with each overhaul cycle.

On the morning of 14 November 2004, flying approximately 100 miles southwest of San Diego, Commander David Fravor of VFA-41 Black Aces broke from a routine training exercise after the Nimitz battle group's controllers reported an anomalous contact — an object that shipboard radar had tracked descending from 80,000 feet to hover just above the sea surface, repeatedly, for several days, with no transponder signal and no radar cross-section consistent with any known aircraft. Fravor, in an F/A-18F Super Hornet, closed to visual range and observed a white, oblong object roughly 40 feet long executing acceleration and directional changes that defied known aerodynamics. The encounter, partially captured on a FLIR targeting pod and later released by the Department of Defense, became the Nimitz UAP incident — the most credible documented unidentified aerial phenomenon on record, the catalyst for formal Pentagon reporting requirements, and ultimately the congressional mandate establishing the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office in 2022. For historians of technology the incident carries a sharp irony: the most capable surveillance platform in human history had encountered something it could neither identify nor intercept.

After more than two decades based at Naval Station Bremerton on Puget Sound, Nimitz eventually made Naval Air Station North Island on Coronado her home — the spit of sand that frames San Diego Bay's western shore and has served as the cradle of American naval aviation since Glenn Curtiss first demonstrated a hydroaeroplane there in January 1911. When the carrier transits the bay — 1,092 feet of gray steel threading a channel barely wider than her beam, her island rising eight stories above a deck that dwarfs most city blocks — the spectacle stops traffic on the Coronado Bridge and draws watchers to the Embarcadero with the same instinctive awe that once greeted the battleships of an earlier age. San Diego is, by history and by geography, a carrier city: the concentration of strike groups, carrier air wings, and the logistical infrastructure that sustains them makes this waterfront the operational center of gravity for American power in the Pacific. To stand at the seawall on North Island with Nimitz at her berth is to stand in the direct lineage of every Pacific engagement from Midway forward — a lineage measured not in years but in the slow rotation of watch sections and the smell of JP-5 on a salt wind off Point Loma.

More than five decades after her commissioning pennant was broken on that Norfolk pier, USS Nimitz remains on the active list — the oldest aircraft carrier in commission anywhere in the world, and by any reasonable measure the most consequential single hull in the history of carrier aviation. She outlasted the Soviet navy she was designed to deter, outlasted the Cold War doctrine that governed her employment, and outlasted several complete generations of aircraft loaded onto her deck as cutting-edge and retired as obsolete. The ten vessels of the Nimitz class that bear her design DNA have been the load-bearing architecture of American forward presence through every crisis of the modern era, from the Strait of Hormuz to the South China Sea. Her successors in the Gerald R. Ford class borrow her hull form and her reactors while replacing steam catapults with electromagnetic launch systems — a lineage as direct as that between a long-gun frigate and a steam-powered ship of the line. Nimitz herself will be inactivated in the years ahead, but the world she proved possible — a world in which a single hull can hold a sovereign nation's commitment anywhere on earth — will endure for as long as American seapower endures.
